Dorothy June Powers, a long-time resident of Jefferson and Ogden, died peacefully surrounded by her family on January 22, 2013 at the age of 98. For the last two years she lived at the Eastern Star Home, her assisted care residence in Boone, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden, Iowa. Rev. Gary Hoyt will officiate. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden. Visitation will be Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Dorothy was born in Woodward, Iowa on June 22, 1914. She was the first of five children: Dorothy, Fern, Byron, Mildred, and Marvel. Parents were Fred and Alma (Small) Arnes. She attended school in Woodward until her senior year when the family moved to a farm south of Ogden. After graduation, she attended comptometer school in Des Moines and worked at American Life Insurance Company until she married Daniel Powers. Her dad sold a wagon load of oats to get the money to pay for her schooling. They had four children: Dennis, Diane, Linda, and Joe.
While living in Jefferson, Dorothy was an active member of the Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, PEO, Eastern Star, Culture Club, and TTT. She also enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, and entertaining. She moved to Ogden in 1978 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. In Ogden, she continued with her clubs and enjoyed seeing her grandchildren in their many school events. For many years she hosted the "Dorothy Party" which often had over 30 Dorothy's attending.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Byron Arnes, Mildred Barnes, and Marvel Ketch. She is survived by her four children: Dennis Powers (Janice) of Ogden, Diane Powers of Santa Cruz, CA, Linda Williamson (David) of Boone, and Joe Powers (Deb Zisko) of Boone. She is also survived by her three grandchildren: Matthew Powers (Marcia) of Griffin, GA, Jasmin Williamson of Indianapolis, IN and Chaz Williamson (Robyn) of Waukee, one great granddaughter, Gia, and one sister, Fern Christensen of Ogden, IA.
