Phyllis was born on December 27, 1924, in Boone Iowa. She was the daughter of Julius and Iva (Zunkel) Youngren. She entered Ogden Community School as a sophomore after completing the Course of Study prescribed for Elementary Schools of Boone County in May of 1940 and received a Master’s of Certificate to the Good Handwriting Club of America. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1944 where her character was noted as quiet and the class predicted she would be out in sandy New Mexico operating a roadside café since she had gained quite a reputation for her milk toast and fried onions along with being an air stewardess and living in the clouds! But instead she went on to complete her beautician training at the Iowa School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines, Iowa in July of 1947. She worked at the Memorial Union business office at Iowa State University and Artistic Beauty Salon before opening her own salon in Ames, called Phyllis’ Beauty Salon, and owned an apartment complex which kept her very busy. She said she was a “scrub lady and all around technician” when they moved in and out. She traveled a lot through Eastern States and Canada and also most of the Western States. She retired in December of 1977 but continued with the upkeep of her apartment house until moving to The Cedars in Madrid and later to the Eastern Star Masonic Home.
Phyllis enjoyed taking her Sunday drives and trips to Dairy Queen for ice cream.
She is survived by her sister, Eileen Smith of Boone, Iowa, and her brother, Dean Youngren of Ogden, Iowa; five nieces, Virgene (Randy) Monthei, Jeanine (Dan) Crosman, Colleen Smith, Lori (Dan) Day, Lynette Huinker and one nephew David (Mindy) Youngren; five great nieces Angie (Monthei) Meylor, Deanne (Day) Hemker, Megan Engleen, Loren Huinker, and Leslie Huinker; four great nephews, Eric Crosman, Paul Crosman, Ryan Monthei, and Brent Day; and nine great-great nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Maynard Youngren, and a sister, Elsie Youngren.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Eastern Star Masonic Home and Nurse Pam VanPelt from Kindred Hospice for the care given to Phyllis.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
