Daniel Paul Friedrichs

Daniel Friedrichs, 68, formerly of Ogden, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Unity Point Health in Keokuk, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ogden. Father James Bruch will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Lacona, Iowa, at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be Monday, November 5, from 5 until 7 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ogden. Daniel Paul Friedrichs was born on June 29, 1950 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Dolores Cornwell and Paul Friedrichs. Daniel graduated from Melcher High School in 1968. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Northeast Missouri (Truman) State University, and a Master’s Degree from Iowa State University.

On June 16, 1973, Dan was united in marriage to Kathleen Dittmer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lacona, Iowa. This union was blessed with two daughters: Kristen and Kassie. Dan taught special education at Ogden Community Schools for over a decade, as well as at Collins-Maxwell and Panorama Schools. Dan and Kathy settled in Ogden in 1986 and called the community home for almost three decades.

Dan had a passion for educating those with special needs and cherished catching up with former students. Dan was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, and was well-known in Ogden for his involvement in several community and political volunteer roles. His work with the Boone County Democrats and The Bill Riley Talent Search were activities that Dan was particularly proud of. He was known by family, friends, and community members for his sense of humor, willingness to strike up a conversation with just about anybody, and his devotion to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Dan also led this full and happy life with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Survivors include his two daughters, Kristen (Lauren) Friedrichs of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Kassie (Ross) Bercik of Waterloo, Iowa; four brothers, Stephen Metz of Altoona, Iowa, Mark Metz of Des Moines, Iowa, John Metz of Des Moines, Iowa, and Kevin Metz of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mary Lou MacLaird of Chariton, Iowa; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law. Dan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kathy in 2014; his mother, Dolores; and his father, Paul.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family, with their intention to donate to the Ogden Athletic Boosters and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
