Darlene B. Johnston, 97, of Dayton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2024, at Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 24, 2024, at Carson ~ Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton. Pastor Angela Cunnigan will officiate. Burial will follow at Washington Township Cemetery in Duncombe. Visitation will be prior to services starting at 11:00 a.m. Please dress in casual attire. Darlene Betty Lass was born on March 11, 1927, in Ogden, Iowa, the daughter of Peter William and Dorothy Ann (Crouse) Lass. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden. Darlene graduated with the Beaver High School class of 1944.
On August 12, 1946, Darlene was united in marriage to Lawrence Harrison Johnston. The couple farmed at Ogden, Boxholm, and Dayton. Darlene was employed by the DeKalb Farm, and Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton, and later at K-Mart in Fort Dodge. Lawrence passed away on April 8, 2002, in Iowa City, Iowa.
Darlene was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton. She loved to read and traveled extensively with Lawrence and close friends, Jack and Marlys Sheibley.
In addition to her parents, Darlene is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Johnston, daughters, Julie Snowgren and Carol (Mickey) Piper, granddaughter, Kimberly Tempel, grandson in infancy, Michael Anderson, great-grandson, Blake Michael Tempel and her brothers, Dean Lass, and Donald (Joyce) Lass.
Survivors include her daughters, Ruth (Marvin) Anderson of Dayton, IA, and Tammie (Trent) Johnson of Webster City, IA; son-in-law, Steve Snowgren of Cairo, MO; five grandchildren, Mark Anderson, Teresa Batterson, Stephanie Wardell, Nathan Chase, and Sarah Snowgren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; grandson-in-law, Mike Tempel; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
