Darrell A. Miller, 73, of Ogden, IA, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, with family by his side at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, IA. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. Rev. Paul Evans will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, with Masonic services held at 7:30 p.m. by the Rhodes Masonic Lodge. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden.
Darrell Alfred Miller, the son of Edgar and Rosamond (Clark) Miller, was born on April 10, 1937, in Ogden, IA. He was a lifelong Ogden resident and supporter of the local community, having grown up on a farm south of town and graduated from Ogden High School in 1955. Darrell married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Johnson, on November 16, 1957, at the Methodist Church in Ogden.
Darrell farmed the family land until retiring in 2000. Post-retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed working traffic control for events at Iowa State University for eight years. Darrell was an active member of the local Rhodes Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona. He enjoyed being a Hospital Dad, transporting children to the Shriner's Hospital in St. Paul, MN. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and sang in the choir. He also served on the Ogden School Board from 1981-1987.
Darrell enjoyed woodworking, camping, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Joyce; three daughters, Melissa Miller and Raymond Cahill of New York, NY, Susan Peterson and Jim Heck of Ogden, IA, and Kristy and Paulo Miranda of Peachtree City, GA; three grandchildren, Karolyn Peterson, Lucas Miranda and Kalia Miranda; three sisters, Norma Anderson and husband Les, Amy Lou Garlock, and Mary Ellen Karas and husband Richard; one brother, Robert Miller and wife Peggy; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, cherished sister Juanita, brother-in-law Reverend Brown Garlock, and grandchildren Marrissa Peterson and Nicholas Miranda.
Carson-Stapp Funeral Home of Ogden is in charge of arrangements.
