Donald Ralph Manguson, 94, lived life to the fullest, until June 29, 2017. He was under Hospice care for two days following a hospital stay at the Veterans Administration hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 3, 2017, at the Dayton United Methodist Church. Pastor Kay. Christie will officiate. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Peterson American Legion Post #323. Don was born south of Dayton on February 5, 1923, to Ralph and Linnea (Sandholm) Manguson. He attended Dayton Community School and graduated in 1940.
Don entered military service December 1942, served in the army, and was honorably discharged in December 1945. He was stationed in New Guinea and then in the Phillipines. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Our Bronze Star Soldier's Medal. He returned home and did several interesting jobs until being hired by the Otis Elevator Company in 1948 until he retired in 1983.
Don was a member of the Peterson American Legion Post# 323 for 72 years, also a member of the United Methodist Church for 80 years where he was confirmed in June of 1937. Don was full of life and loved to tell stories, many of which were about the years in the service or his work with Otis. He enjoyed people and never met a stranger.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Glenn, who died as children, Charles, Dwain, Ray and one sister, Dorothy Simons and his long time special friend, Theresa Peiffer.
He is survived by sisters, Alice Johnson, Marjory Udall, Helen Martin, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and many Peiffer nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews.
