Donald R. Kuhl

Donald Kuhl, 85, of Pilot Mound, Iowa, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Boone County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Pilot Mound United Methodist Church. Rev. Dennis Shepherd will officiate. Burial will be in the Pilot Mound Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites presented by the Boone Veteran's Council. Visitation will be Monday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Carson - Stapp Funeral Home in Ogden.

Donald Ray Kuhl was born on July 26, 1925, in Ogden, Iowa, the son of John and Lilly (Heineman) Kuhl. He graduated with the Ogden High School class of 1943. Following his education, Don enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served from October of 1943, until his honorable discharge in March of 1946. After serving his country, Don returned to Ogden where he worked as a mechanic at the Chevy garage. On February 4, 1951, Don was united in marriage to Pauline Zunkel at the United Methodist Church in Pilot Mound. The couple lived and farmed southeast of Pilot Mound for 57 years. Don retired in 1990, and remained on the farm until moving to the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone in March on 2009.

Don was a member of the Pilot Mound United Methodist Church and was a 60 year member of the Groom-Kimsey American Legion Post #16. He was a long time member of the Pilot Mound Men's Chorus and was a bass singer for the Farmer's Four Quartet. Don was an avid fan of Iowa State athletics and attended many home wrestling meets. Aviation was also a passion of Don's and he loved going to air shows and visiting airplane museums. In his earlier years, Don enjoyed hunting and also attended many professional sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Kuhl of Jefferson, Iowa; children, Randy Kuhl of Boone, Iowa, Lori (Joe) Redeker of Boone, Iowa, and Larry (Lisa) Kuhl of Jefferson, Iowa; and seven grandchildren, Courtney Hall, Mike, Grant, Leah, and Christine Redeker, and Ashley and Nicole Kuhl. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Rolland Kuhl and Richard Kuhl.
