He was born June 5, 1929 in Ogden, IA to Edward Bernard Nelson and Luella Viola (Nornholm) Nelson. He was an active lifelong member of Swede Valley Lutheran Church and later Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Growing up in Ogden, Dean developed a strong work ethic, early on, delivering newspapers and groceries on his bicycle, working as a meat cutter at Tonsfeldt's grocery store, and eventually devoting 41 years to Northern Natural Gas Company. He especially enjoyed his position as a measurement technician.
Dean graduated from Ogden High School in 1947 where he loved playing the tuba in the band. On June 26, 1949 he married June Lee Olney in Boone. To this union two daughters were born.
From 1948 until 1954 Dean was a member of the Iowa National Guard. As a charter member of the Ogden Volunteer Fire Department his service spanned 28 years.
Dean enjoyed golfing, bowling, Kansas family reunions, and his role as "Grandpa Dean." Hours were spent teaching his grandkids how to ride a bike, playing games, always lending an ear and extending help whenever needed! The great-grandkids brought him a lot of pleasure in the past few years.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and very recently his wife, June. He is survived by daughters, Julie Nelson of Toluca Lake, CA, Nora (Marvin Hitchings) Nelson of Ames, IA; one sister, Darlene Griffith of Des Moines, one brother, Don (Judy) Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Nicole (John) Gade of Ankeny, Kelly Nelson of St. Louis Park, MN, Megan (Donny) Haddox of Thousand Oaks, CA, Colter (Chris) Earl of Henderson, NV; seven great-grandchildren, Griffin Nelson Gade, Evee Viola Gade, Kylie June Kaiser, Alexa Haddox, Nathanael, Liljana and Tyler Nelson Earl.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be used for the Swede Valley Lutheran Church Preservation Fund.
