Elaine Kauffman, 94, of Boxholm, Iowa, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm, Iowa. Rev. Rod Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Lawn Cemetery in Boxholm, Iowa. Elaine Cordelia Freeman was born on March 20, 1924, in Boone County, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Lillie (Swanson) Freeman. She attended Boxholm Consolidated Schools graduating in 1941. Elaine worked as a school secretary at Boxholm for one year before attending the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls receiving a two year teaching degree.
Elaine worked at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant in Baraboo, Wisconsin during WW II. Her first teaching position was at Pocahontas Community Schools for two years. She moved to Rockwell City and taught for five years where she met Daniel Kauffman.
On August 12, 1950, Elaine married Daniel at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm. They made their home in Boxholm area.
Elaine taught 4th grade at Pilot Mound until she retired in 1980. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A., church choir, and a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. Elaine was in the Alpha Study Club and NASM Club. She was affectionately called Grandma Cookie by her great grandchildren because of the wonderful chocolate chip and sugar cookies they received from her. She loved baking and taught her grandchildren to make many of her recipes.
She is survived by her son, Tom (Frances) Kauffman of Boxholm, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Laurie Kauffman of Harcourt, Iowa; six grandchildren: Matt (Kelly) Kauffman, Mike (Katie) Kauffman, Megan (Jon) Christie, Mallory Kauffman, John Kauffman, and Holly Kauffman; six great-grandchildren: Joe, Grace, Kennedy, Charlie, Christopher and Chase and a sister, Marie Bengtson of Boxholm.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dan in 2014; son, Ray; grandson, Mark and a sister, Darlene Hanson.
Memorials may be left to Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm.
