Gary Alban 72, Editor and Publisher of the Ogden Reporter died Thursday December 30, 2010. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sharon of Ogden; son, David and wife, Megan Sweeney of Monroe, New York; daughter, Diane and husband Mark of Lincoln, Nebraska, brother, Ron and wife Carla of Orland, California and three grandchildren Justin, 20, Winter Park, Florida, Kalen, 14, Lincoln, Nebraska and Vincent, 9 of Monroe, New York. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Community United Methodist Church, Ogden, Iowa at 10:30 am. Visitation is Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm also at the Community United Methodist Church. Carson - Stapp Funeral Home in Ogden is in charge of arrangements.
Alban began his newspaper career at the Ogden Reporter as a sophomore in high school in 1953. He was named Editor in 1965, and purchased the business in 1966. Alban loved his family, faith, and the Ogden community and devoted his life to them. Through the years, he received numerous awards and recognition for his writing, photography and community service, including, most notably, Master Editor-Publisher in 1988, Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Newspaper Association in 2005 as well as the Fifty years of service award for his years in the newspaper business.
In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a scholarship in Gary's honor through the Gary Alban Journalism Scholarship Foundation. Memorials to be sent to Box R, Ogden, Iowa 50212.
