Gordon R. Swanson

Gordon R. Swanson passed away Friday, August 7, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Ia.

His wishes were that his body be donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 12, 2009, with visitation one hour before the service at the Dayton United Methodist Church, Dayton, Ia.

He was born on August 22, 1925, to Walter and Frances (Erickson) Swanson at Boxholm, Iowa. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1942. He served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He was a life member of the American Legion and the 2nd Division Marine Corp. Assn.

He was confirmed into the Methodist Church at age 13 and has been a member ever since.

In 1946, Gordon married Darlene Mayfield. They had three sons. They were married for 50 years when Darlene died.

In December of 1997, Gordon was united in marriage to Alice Vicini.

Gordon is survived by his present wife, Alice, his 3 sons, Dick and Kathryn of Dayton, Larry and Anna Marie of Fontanelle and Dale of Gillette, Wy., step daughter, Linda and Bob Christensen of Massachusetts, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, brothers, Lowell and Keith and wife Berniece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, 1 brother and 1 great grandchild and two sister-in-laws.

He enjoyed his family, his home and doing volunteer work.
