Harold E. Kalahar, 82, of Dayton, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 13th, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
A Celebration of Life will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 17, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Pastor Kay. Christie will officiate. Harold Eugene Kalahar was born on June 17, 1933, in Lehigh, Iowa, the son of Morris and Bertha (Kretlow) Kalahar. He attended Lehigh Public Schools graduating with the class of 1950.
Following his education, Harold served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955, during the Korean War.
On March 25, 1956, Harold was united in marriage to Leona "Oney" Young at the Lehigh United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Lehigh until establishing their home on an acreage east of Dayton in 1969. Harold worked at Hormel's in Fort Dodge for over 33 years until their final closing. He later worked for the Dayton Community Schools until retiring in 1995.
Harold was an avid car fan and in earlier years did mechanical work and also raced stock cars. He loved horses and was honored to be a Legacy Breeder for 50+ years of consecutive breeding of American Quarter Horses.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Leona "Oney" Kalahar of Dayton, Iowa; daughter, Andrea (Mike) Grady of Manson, Iowa; son, Randy (Laurie) Kalahar of Gowrie, Iowa; three grandchildren, Kyle, Trevor, and Ashlee; two great-grandchildren, Karter and Brielle; his twin sister, Doris Kuehnast of Humboldt, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents, and one brother, Donald Kalahar, preceded him in death.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
