Harry J. Peters, 85, of Dayton, Iowa, went to his Lord Saturday, September 22, 2007, at his home.
Harry's wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Rev. Keith Putney and Rev. L.J. Hartley will officiate. Burial of cremains will be in the Dayton Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Peterson American Legion Post #323. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5:00 to 7:30 P.M., at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Carson Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements
Harry J. Peters was born on February 6, 1922, in Dallas County, Iowa, the son of James and Edna (Borop) Peters. He was a graduate of the Jefferson High School. Harry served as a Sergeant in the United States Army Air Force during WWII and was stationed at Foster Field in Texas. While serving his country, Harry attended the Curtiss Wright School in New York where he received specialized training. Harry was united in marriage to Freda Mae Dobson an August 4, 1944, at the Christian Church in Jefferson. The couple lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, for one year prior to moving to Jefferson in the late 1940's. While living in Jefferson, Harry went into business with his father selling Surge Milking Machines for Babson Brothers. He later acquired his own territory and moved to Dayton where he and Freda established their home. Harry later owned and operated Peters Plumbing & Heating in Dayton for over 40 years until retiring.
Harry was a 50+ year member of the United Methodist Church in Dayton. He had served as a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and belonged to the Peterson American Legion Post #323. He also served on the Dayton City Council and was a Volunteer Fireman for 17 years. Harry loved nature and enjoyed watching the birds and deer from his living room window. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many treasured keepsakes for his family. He was an avid fisherman and mushroom hunter.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Freda Peters of Dayton, Iowa; a daughter, Jill (Larry) Edwards of Lime Springs, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Judy Peters of Webster City, Iowa; four grandchildren, Brock Edwards (Julie) and Emma Edwards, Jennifer (Christopher) Groos and Ann (Brandon) Garvey; three great-grandchildren, Hannah and Henry Groos and Ava Garvey; a sister, Ethel Twombley of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Frank Peters in 2002; one brother, Roy Peters; and two sisters, Kathleen Duffy and Mary Quirk.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
