HALSTEAD - Rate, Ina Marguerite Gehlbach, age 94, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away Wednesday, 3 August 2011.
Marguerite was born 23 April 1917 in Minburn, Iowa, to Lela Mae Hunter Gehlbach and Herman Henry Gehlbach. Her siblings, who preceded her in death, were Malcolm Gehlbach, Hunter Gehlbach, and Phyllis Crandall.
The Gehlbach family moved to Ogden, Iowa, where Marguerite attended elementary and high school. Her mother, Lela, moved to Iowa City where she ran a boarding house for students so her own children could attend the University of Iowa.
Marguerite graduated from the University of Iowa in 1939 with a degree in journalism. That same spring, she married Robert Goodwin Rate, M.D. Dr. Rate preceded her in death on 29 October 1979 after forty years of marriage. His medical internship, residency, and a career required the family to move to Santa Barbara, CA, San Francisco, CA; Denver, CO; Washington, D.C.; Heidelberg, Germany; and finally to settle in Halstead, KS.
She played an active role in the arts as volunteer and volunteer board member of the Wichita Art museum, as participant in numerous museum tours abroad, and as a life-long collector in her own right.
Marguerite is survived by her children: Selene Hunter aka Nancy Anne Rate and her husband, Tom Yamamoto; Lyman Thair Rate and his wife, Jane; Robert Gehlbach Rate and his wife, Peggy; Peggy Candace Rate and her husband, David McCurry. She considered her children her She is also survived by five grandchildren: Betsy Rate, Peter Rate, Emily Rate, Lyman Rate, and Suzanne Rate. She gave freely of her time and energy to them.
Visitation with the family present from 6-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2011. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. at Wulf-Ast Mortuary, 213 West Wichita Avenue, Colwich, Kansas.
A memorial service will be held at Homestead Assisted Living, 715 West 6th, Halstead, Kansas, on Tuesday Aug. 9 at 2:00 p.m. The family will gather for a private burial at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden, Iowa.
