John H. Hambleton, 90, of Dayton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024, at his home in Dayton.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2024, at the former Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton. Rev. Michael Standfest & Rev. Aaron Hambleton will officiate. Inurnment will follow at the Dayton Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites will be performed by the Peterson American Legion Post #323. John Howard Hambleton was born on September 5, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Franklin and Vera (Brunskill) Hambleton. He was baptized on March 21, 1937, at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Sioux City, Iowa. John graduated with the Dayton High School class of 1952. Following his education, John served his Country in the United States Air Force from 1952–1956. John later earned his Associates Degree from Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge (1977).
On April 3, 1955, John was united in marriage to Doris Mary Hoyer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton. John and Doris resided in Reno, Nevada, for 17 months prior to establishing their home in Dayton. The couple fostered 25 babies. John was employed as a custodian and school bus driver for the Dayton Community School System, and later as an Insurance Agent for Thrivent for many years. In retirement, John worked with his wife Doris as a driver and tour escort for Northwest Iowa Tours.
John belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton, and was a longtime member of the Dayton Lions Club. He enjoyed counted cross stich and had entries at the Iowa State Fair for 20 years. John and Doris enjoyed traveling and wintered in Weslaco, Texas for 19 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 68 years, Doris Hambleton, siblings, Galen, Maxine, Lloyd, Shirley, Bonnie, Betty, and Marvin, one son, Mark Hambleton, and one great-granddaughter, Anastasia Hope Hambleton.
Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Jane Hambleton (Mark’s wife) of Fort Dodge, IA; three sons, Monte (Kathy) Hambleton of Fulshear, TX, Mitch (Ruth) Hambleton of Dallas Center, IA, and Blake (Melissa) Hambleton of Richmond, TX; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Beth Hambleton of Easley, South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
