John W. Olson, 95, of Dayton, Iowa, died Saturday, January 3, 2009, at Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Carson - Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton. Rev. Keith Putney will officiate. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Peterson American Legion Post #323. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Carson - Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton.
John Walter Olson was born on July 20, 1913, in Fairbanks, Alaska, the son of John B. and Bertha Olson. As a youngster John moved with his family to Deer Park, Washington where he attended local schools, graduating with the Deer Park High School class of 1931.
John was united in marriage to Bonnie Stansfield on July 30, 1941, at the Methodist Church in Boise, Idaho. He served in the United States Air Force from 1936 until retiring in 1957. During that time the couple had lived in Boise, Idaho, Tacoma, Washington, Edmond, Canada, Long Beach California, Minnesota and Kansas City, Missouri. After retiring from the Air Force, John and Bonnie returned to Tacoma, Washington, where they made their home for seven years. They later moved to northern California and traveled the west coast with their trailer camper. In 1994 the couple moved to Dayton. Bonnie passed away on October 23, 2000. John moved to Grandview Health Care Center in June of 2004.
John was member of the United Methodist Church in Dayton and belonged to the Dayton Lion's Club.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth Pfeiffer of Deer Park, Washington; as well as several cousins, nieces, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie Olson; one brother, Adolph Olson; and one sister, Ann Syphers.
Memorials may be left to the United Methodist Church in Dayton.
