Johnny D. Berns, 67, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 18, 2014, at his home.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. Steve Satre will officiate. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Boone Veteran's Council. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church. Johnny Dean Berns was born on June 17, 1947, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Garbrant "John" and Velda (Sparks) Berns. He moved with his family to Ogden in 1954. Johnny graduated with the Ogden High School class of 1965, and went on to attend Iowa State University until enlisting in the United States Navy in October of 1966. He served his country during Vietnam on the USS Constellation and was honorably discharged in October of 1972.
On September 30, 1967, Johnny was united in marriage to Kathi Miller at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ogden. To this union two daughters were born.
Johnny had worked at Don's Mobile Station, Van Sickle Construction, and Oscar Meyer in Perry. He went on to work at Northern Natural Gas in Ogden as a Field Technician for 45 years, retiring on January 3rd of 2014.
Johnny was an avid NASCAR fan, loved working on cars, tinkering in the garage, family grill outs, and spending time with his grandchildren. In 1969, Johnny bought a 1969 Ford Torino G.T. which he still has to this day.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Kathi Berns of Ogden, Iowa; daughter, Tammi (Chad) Borsheim of Kelley, Iowa; two grandchildren, Tayler and Briesen; and many nieces, nephew, and cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
