Josephine A. Schall, 100, formerly of Ogden died Sunday, June 23, at Westhaven Community in Boone.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at St. John Catholic Church in Ogden. Father Jim Bruch will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery. She was born in Boone, April 6, 1913, the daughter of Joseph C. Flannery and Katherine C. (Coffey) Flannery. Jo graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1931. She worked for F.W. Woolworth Stores for eight years then in 1940, she entered Nurse Training at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She graduated in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy Nurse Corp in Omaha before starting work at the Boone Hospital where she taught nurse aides and did private duty. In 1944 she reported to Great Lakes for training in the Navy Nurse Corp. Jo was stationed there, then to Oaknoll Naval Hospital, Oakland, CA, and North Island Naval Hospital, San Diego. She was a Lt. (j.g.) and Honorably Discharged from Active duty in 1946 and from the Reserves in 1951.
On June 4, 1947, she married Charles Schall of rural Ogden. She enjoyed the life of a farmer's wife on their farm southwest of Ogden where they raised their three children. They moved to town in 1977, and she lived at this home until December of 2012.
She was a member of St. John Catholic Church and Rosary Society. She was a 4-H leader and member of the American Legion Post 0055. Jo and Charlie enjoyed travels to Europe, the Middle East and much of the United States. In 2010, she traveled to Washington D.C. as part of the Honor Flight series for WWII Veterans.
Survivors include a daughter Cathy and son-in-law Jerry Phillips of Omaha, two sons, Tom of Sahuarita, AZ, and Dan and daughter-in-law Shelly Schall of Ogden; four granddaughters, Amanda (Jeremy) Nye of Altoona, IA, Megan (Tim) Duncan of Garwin, IA, Karisha Schall (fiancé Joey De La Rosa) of Austin, TX, and Christina Schall of Cambridge, MA; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Ashlynn Duncan; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie, parents, brother and three sisters.
