Merle Jenkins

Merle Jenkins, 90, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018, at his home.



Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 29, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden. Pastor Lyle Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in the Rippey Cemetery. Merle was born September 8, 1927, near Rippey, Iowa, to Vestus and Florence (Johnson) Jenkins. He attended country school and graduated from Rippey High School in 1945.



On September 10, 1950, Merle was united in marriage to Betty Johannsen of Woodward, Iowa. They were blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Karen.



Merle was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and served 18 months in Germany as a medic in the 2nd Armored Division. Upon his return, Merle farmed in the Rippey and Ogden areas for 25 years. He then worked as a carpenter for Sandler-Built Homes in Boone and later as a custodian for Ogden High School.



Merle is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters Cheryl (Paul) White of Ames, Iowa, and Karen (Tom) Jones of Ankeny, Iowa; five grandchildren, Matthew White of Ames, Ben White of Ames, Patrice (Bryant) Ott of Omaha, Nebraska, Kimber (Tae) Barto of Ankeny, and Brett (Stephanie) Jones of Columbia, South Carolina; four great-grandchildren, James and Conor Ott of Omaha, and Balin and Mara Barto of Ankeny; and a sister, Maxine (Bob) Topping of Perry, Iowa; and two nieces and one nephew.



Merle was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shandon White, and a brother-in-law, Dale White; and a great-grandson, Hoon Thomas Barto.



In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden, the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes Association.
