Mildred Berdella Rodgers passed away Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Evangelical Free Home in Boone, Iowa. She was born December 16, 1916, on the family farm south of Pilot Mound to Charles and Bessie Violet (Clark) Zunkel. She attended Pilot Mound High School, graduating with the Class of 1934. She worked as a waitress in Iowa City for several years before her marriage to Thomas Dan "Dan" Rodgers on June 7, 1939, in Keokuk, Iowa. They made their home in Iowa City until Dan was ordered to duty in World War II. She followed him to various posts on the West Coast until he was ordered overseas at which time she returned to Iowa and made her home with her parents until his return.
Mildred was an avid quilter until eyesight problems no longer allowed her to enjoy that hobby. She did not keep track of how many quilts she pieced but has records of over 400 including many at the Pilot Mound Methodist Church. She loved to bake bread and continued that activity even while living at the Evangelical Free Home where she sometimes baked for residents and staff.
She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Groom Kimsey Post 16, in Pilot Mound for over 50 years. She attended the Mother's Club in Pilot Mound and on one of their outings, won the Quiz Queen Contest in Boone. One of many prizes awarded was a trip to New York City to participate in the national contest.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six siblings and their spouses: Baby Charlie, Margaret and Charles White, Eldon and Margie Zunkel, Edith and Orville Curry, Marie and Kenneth Sumstine and Herbert and Marian Zunkel. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara and husband William Mondt of San Diego,CA; two sons, Thomas "Tom" Dan Jr. and wife Gail, and Charles and wife Elia, all of Odgen; Grandchildren Karl Mondt and Laura Mondt, both of San Diego, CA; Susan Mondt and husband Antonio Gonella of Glendale, CA; Dan Rodgers of Ogden: Xann Rodgers Mather and husband Al of West Liberty; Charles "Manny" and wife Lisa of Nevada; Eric and wife Lindsey of Underwood. She has five Great-grandchildren: Sydney Mondt, Kelzi and Keaton Mather, Manuel Jacob Rodgers and Parker Jace "PJ" Rodgers.
Services will be held Monday, December 28, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., at Carson - Stapp Funeral Home in Ogden. Judy Winkelpleck will officiate. Burial will be in the Pilot Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Carson - Stapp Funeral Home in Ogden.
