Richard "Dick" Chinburg

Richard "Dick" Lee Chinburg, 88, of Dayton, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017, at his home one day after his 88th birthday.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 4, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Carson – Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton with funeral service at 10:30 a.m., Friday, the 5th, at the Dayton United Methodist Church. Pastor Kay.Christie will officiate. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Peterson Post #431. Dick was born in Dayton, Iowa the second son of Leonard and Mabel Viola (LeValley) Chinburg on December 30, 1929. As a child growing up in Dayton, his passion for horses was nurtured by his Grandpa LeValley. He attended Dayton Community Schools.

Richard was married to Beverly A. McCubbin on June 18, 1950; and they were blessed with two daughters, Martel Sue and Michelle Ann. Richard joined the United States Army taking his Basic Training at Fort Riley, KS, then serving in Alaska as Military Police during the Korean Conflict. He was Honorably Discharged as Acting CPL.

Following the time serving his Country they briefly lived in California before returning to Iowa to raise their girls in Gowrie. Dick then moved back to Dayton following their divorce. He later married Shirley Thomas on May 1st, 1978, and happily gained a stepdaughter, Gina. The couple later divorced. Sadly his daughter, Michelle, passed away in 1986.

Dick was an avid rodeo fan working in the chutes and serving as announcer for many years. Auctioneering was another passion, so to perfect his skills he attended and graduated from the World Wide Auctioneer College in Mason City. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation followed by Webster County Roads Department and retired with thirty years of service. He was a member of the Dayton Wranglers, the Hitchin To Go Driving Club, Gowrie Gauchos, the American Legion Peterson Post #431 - Gowrie, and United Methodist Church in Gowrie and later Dayton, Iowa. Dick also conducted auctions for Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Michelle Veibell; his younger brother, Jerry Dee Chinburg; his beloved aunt, Marjorie (Bess) Pettycrew; and uncle, Steven LeValley.

Dick is survived by his older brother, Don Chinburg of Lisle, Illinois; his half brother, Jon and wife Norma Wenkalman of Sylmar, California; his daughter, Martel and husband Mike Williams of Choctaw, Oklahoma, and stepdaughter, Gina and husband Kevin Demery of Duncombe, Iowa. Grandchildren, Marcus and wife Jennifer Williams serving overseas in the United States Air Force, Megan and husband Jeff Stanolis of Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Cole and wife Brandi Veibell; great grandchildren, Matthew Harris, Michelle Harris, Lucy Stanolis, Lexi Stanolis, Jack Stanolis, Jennalyn Williams, Ashton Veibell, Lawson Lyphtoe; and many nieces and nephews. Dick also leaves behind a multitude of friends.
