Richard Eugene Sonquist was born on December 11, 1924 and peacefully passed away on May 14, 2017, at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa. Dick was born, raised and lived his entire life in the Boxholm and Dayton area. He was the only child of the late Leslie and Hazel Sonquist and the beloved husband of Twylla Sonquist for 69 years.
Dick loved his life-long profession of farming and was awarded Outstanding Young Farmer in 1958. While farming, he was also a Pioneer International Seed dealer for 13 years. Dick gave generously of his time to the community. He was the secretary of the Dayton Co-op Elevator, the Director of the Webster County Swine Producers, served on various offices for the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Dayton Lions Club.
Dick served in World War II from January 1945 to November 1946 in Hawaii and has been a member of the American Legion for 70 years, since returning from service. He served as the Post Adjunct and local Commander of Boxholm Arthur Anderson Post 63 as well as the Boone County Commander. Dick was dedicated to honoring veterans each year for Memorial Day services until only a few years before his death.
Dick touched the lives of many people with his smile and sense of humor. He enjoyed many years as a member of the Dayton Golf and Country Club and rarely missed daily morning and afternoon coffee with his friends. He loved to travel and visited much of the United States on bus trips with Twylla. In retirement, Dick and Twylla traveled to Alabama each winter to join fellow snowbirds in Orange Beach.
Dick is survived by and will forever be remembered by his daughters Miriam (Mike) Schultz, Michal Bylund and Melinda (Tom) Gladitsch along with their treasured grandchildren Jacob (Mindy) Bylund, Andrea (Todd) Marshall, Maradith (Jon) Janssen, Michael (Becky) Schultz Jr., Marcia (Michael) Dahlstrom, Charles and Elizabeth Gladitsch. He will also be remembered by his fifteen great-grandchildren along with countless other friends and family who were blessed to know him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Hazel Sonquist.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Pastor Kay. Christie will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Church. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites performed by the Peterson American Legion Post #323.
