Roy Heggen Sr.

June 29, 1923 — April 18, 2014

Roy Edward Heggen, age 90, of Dayton passed away on April 18, 2014. Roy was the son of Elof Bernard and Ingeborg Teresia (Inga Bergstrom) Heggen was born on a farm near Moorland, IA on June 29, 1923.

In 1925 the Elof & Inga family moved to a farm northeast of Harcourt. Roy attended Harcourt Consolidated School and entered the farming occupation in 1943. He married Darlene Tell on August 25, 1943. They lived on farms west of Dayton and northeast of Harcourt. In 1972, Roy and Darlene moved to the Elof and Heggen farm. Roy stayed on the farm after Darlene's death in February 1994. In July of 1995, Roy married Annabelle Bjornson of Dayton. They moved to Dayton in 1998. After Annabelle's death in March 2004, Roy continued to live at his home in Dayton. Roy farmed until 1988 when he retired. Roy also worked during the winter months at Rueben Lundberg's-Dayton (1948) and Westrum Motors-Stratford (1960s). During the 1950s, Roy delivered meat for Ertl's Locker of Harcourt. In addition to farming, Roy had a passion for painting. During the winter months in the early 1980s, Roy and Maurice Bjornson started taking painting classes. Over the course of several decades, Roy painted in oils and sketched in charcoal. Through the years he perfected the art of painting on fabric. In turn, five quilts were made from his paintings with each quilt having a theme: churches (Webster County area), barns of Iowa, Australia & John Deere cotton pickers, IDOT/Harcourt/farming and Roy's life history.

Roy is survived by his four children: Ed (Jacki) of Ford Dodge, IA, Vickie (Dave Duba) of Farmington, MN, Dan of Slater IA & Jim (Sharon) of Harcourt, IA, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; three step-children: Maureen (Ron) Anderson of Colfax IA, Doreen Runyan of Iona KS & Steve (Lorraine) Bjornson of Albia IA, several step grandchildren & step great-grandchildren, and seven brothers & sisters: Betty Smith, Des Moines, IA, Virginia Tynan of Omaha NB, Richard (Lorraine) of Ames, IA, Wilma (Gene) Hair of Fort Dodge, IA, Peggy Jackson of Des Moines, IA, Ilene Werner of Fort Dodge IA, and Don (Jan) of Long Grove, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation from 4-7 PM Tuesday, April 22 at the United Methodist Church, Dayton and funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Dayton.
