Russell "Dale" Smalley Jr., 76, of Beaver, Iowa, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at his home.
Dale's wishes were to be cremated. Visitation will be Sunday, March 13, 2016, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., at Carson – Stapp Funeral Home in Ogden. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Carson - Stapp Funeral Home with a light dinner and Celebration of Life to follow at the Beaver Community Center. Russell Dale Smalley Jr. was born on May 25, 1939, in Ogden, Iowa the son of Russell and Eva (Harris) Smalley. He attended elementary schools in Beaver, graduated with the Grand Junction High School class of 1958, and went on to attend McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas.
On January 23, 1960, Dale was united in marriage to Marjorie Hanley at English River Church of the Brethren in South English, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Kim, Deb, Russell, and Teresa. Dale and Marjorie established their home in Beaver in 1962
Dale was employed by Cargill Elevator in Beaver for 18 years and later worked at Grabau Construction in Boone for many years until retiring.
Dale belonged to the Beaver Church of the Brethren where he was a Deacon for many years. He served on the Beaver City Council for 47 years, managed the Community Center in Beaver, and volunteered in many other capacities. In younger years, Dale enjoyed sports of all kinds and also organized co-ed softball leagues. When he wasn't participating, Dale enjoyed watching sporting events and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Donna Moser, and Evelyn Lansing.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Pastor Marjorie Smalley of Beaver, Iowa; Kim (Joe) Pritchett of Vale, North Carolina, Deb (Richard) Dunne of Ames, Iowa, Russell (Lauri) Smalley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Teresa Kidd of Mulvane, Kansas; 11 grandchildren, Chris and J.J. Pritchett, Carrie, Nicholas (Autumn), Philip, Emma, and Esther Dunne, Shawn (Becky) and Russell Smalley, and Justus and Bailey Kidd; 3 great-grandchildren, Ajay, Claire, and Liam Smalley; two sisters, Ruth Evans of Beaver, Iowa, and Twyla Mackowiak, of Ogden, Iowa; one brother, Paul (Carlene) Smalley of Nebraska City, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
