Shirley P. Vangilder Gettinger

Shirley Linn VanGilder Gettinger, 94, of Dayton, Iowa passed away on Monday, September 9, 2019 at Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton.

A memorial service for Shirley will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2019 at McGuire Bend United Brethren Church in rural Dayton, Iowa with Rev. Kay. Christie officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Burial will be at the McGuire Bend Church Cemetery. Shirley was born in rural Dayton on June 4, 1925 to Leslie and Elsie (Dutcher) Linn. She graduated from Dayton High School in 1943. She married Howard VanGilder and they made their home in Warren, Ohio for 14 years, moving to Dayton in 1960. He passed away in 1965. She remarried in 1972 and lived in Gowrie and Estherville. She worked in a nursing home and the Emmet County Home for ten years. She moved back to Dayton in 2001.

Survivors include her children, Leslie (Diana) VanGilder of Dayton, Keith (Linda) VanGilder of Carroll, Daryl (Carol) VanGilder of Dayton, Linda Nelson of Lakefield, MN., Faith VanGilder of Dayton; son-in-law, Mike Smith of Junction City, KS; her sister, Sharon Priest of Fredricksburg, VA; sister-in-law, Rose Linn of Dayton; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. . She was preceded in death by both husbands, two daughters, one son, one grandson and both parents.

Shirley was a life-long member of the McGuire Bend Church and was a volunteer at Grandview Health Care Center for many years. In lieu of flowers, Shirley requests memorials be given to the McGuire Bend Church.
